My field Journal

I have started to keep very detailed field notes, in light of an incident which happened on the night of February 16, 05. Anything previous to that entry has been moved from an old page. I have also decided to publish it to give you a better idea of what happens out there. The actual names of the locations are not published, as I prefer to keep these confidential. This may act as a magnet for others to go see, thus potentially spoiling my research.

Night scream is active once again. Summer is eventually getting here slowly and I am looking forward to the night expeditions. Operation night scream is simply playing back the sasquatch screams through a loud speaker mounted on top of the vehicle in any given location. I must say that these screams are not proven sasquatch vocalizations, but alleged ones. However, the wave patterns do not match any known creatures in the classified animal kingdom. The result I am hoping for is an answer or a sighting. Any results will be posted here on this page.
There is one cautionary note to research of this nature. No one knows yet what the different screams mean. I would advise anyone doing this NOT TO DO THIS ALONE! If an answer does come back be prepared for a possible confrontation. It is always best to do this sort of work with a group of people and have a good spotlight ready. The sasquatch has been known to stop when bright lights are shone in the eyes. They are nocturnal creatures. If anyone has had success with this I would like to hear from you!
With that said, I have chosen a number of nights to go out on. I will keep you posted on the results.

May 03/04
The calling has begun. I have chosen a fairly remote area. The calls were played with 5 minute intervals for about 30 minutes. Nothing answered, but this was only the first time. If anything does answer, it will take multiple visits to the area. Patience is key.

May 16/04
I have returned to my calling spot twice more now. I have learned that the screams scare everything away, but the deer. An observation note: the deer actually came closer to the car. My spotlight revealed at least ten deer at the bush line looking. This is probably just a curiosity thing, but why did everything else leave? This was evident by the birds flying away and creatures crashing through the bush away from the sounds. I must look into this. I have had no return calls, but the research will continue at this location.
On another note I have thought about what types of calls may attract a sasquatch. An interesting theory is playing sounds of wounded animals, such as deer. The recording of a wolf pack howling may also attract one. Sometimes howling indicates a celebration by the pack of a fresh kill. Anything larger than a wolf may come to investigate. The work goes on!

Strange happenings in the immediate area.

Well where do I start here? These events are based on the stories as told by other individuals, as well as myself.
One day in early January my spouse took our dog out for an afternoon walk down the trails behind town. These trails wind through dense bush and is very scenic. When they got home I was told of some extremely strange behavior on the dog's part. Let me say first that the dog loves to run everywhere...in wide circles as far away as 100 metres. The dog had apparently stuck close on this walk and would wander no more than a few metres ahead. At one point she stopped and whined and came back with tail tucked between the legs. She was also looking in the same direction, no matter what trail they would go down. This was reported and it was interesting. The dog has never been scared of anything and has chased black bears out of the yard. My spouse commented it felt like she was being watched by something.
A few days later another individual had commented that their dog was acting very strangely in the bush, which was a few hundred metres from the first observation. Another case of the dog staying at the side with fear...not running wild, as normal. This individual had noted this behavior was strange indeed.
Two days later yet another individual had reported that their relatives dog did not want to go into the bush. This dog was always willing to go out to the bush. The comment made was that it was odd behaviour.
Throughout all of this I had been out and about one night for a walk by myself. There was a gentle south breeze blowing in from the bush line. All of a sudden I caught an awful stench that made me stop. It reeked of rotten fish and vomit (that's the best I could describe it)and it was extremely overpowering. I made a noise as I almost gagged and the smell disappeared. I had never smelled anything like this, and I have spent hundreds of hours out in the bush.
About one week after I took the dog out for a late night walk (approx. 11:00 PM) down the trails. On the way back the dog ran ahead a few metres, stopped, looked ahead, whined then ran back to me with her tail between her legs. My reaction was to get to town as fast as possible because something struck me as not being right. I have always been one to take note of my dog's reactions because the sense of smell and hearing are 100 times better than ours.
The final event was a sighting of strange tracks in the snow. I don't honestly know what made them, but the size of the imprints were at least 5 times mine and the strides were 6 -7 feet apart. I returned the next day and took a picture with a ruler for scale. I have lived here most of my life and this was a first. The photo is here and you can make your own decisions.
I have no solid proof of what was in the area, but the evidence was out there and observed by more than one person. In the last 3 weeks the dogs are running freely without a care in the bush. Very stange indeed.

February 16, 2005

Headed out towards the bush on the north shore of the river to scout for Sasquatch activity. The time was 23:00. I was going to bypass one particular road and leave it for last, but decided to comb it first. Around 23:30 I arrived on the scene of a set of large tracks. The trail went off into the bush towards the right side of the road. I turned the car so the headlights pointed onto the trail, then hit the brights. I also turned on my 2 million canldepower spotlight and rested it on the roof of the car, pointed towards the bush. Letting the dog out, I went to go check out the tracks. I put my boot into one of the tracks, which are a size 11. The track dwarfed my boot. The stride was only 2.5 feet and there was a few MM of snow in the tracks. They were in very good shape. They did not look like boot prints at all. The track widened towards the top (8") and was rounded at the bottom. I proceded to walk in further and I heard some branches break to my left, just ahead.

There then came the sound of wood on wood, like a stick hitting a tree or log. The dog ran to me and I walked back to the car. Standing behind the open door I called the dog into the car. She was terrified because her tail was between her legs. I stood there watching and listening. Whatever it was, began moving towards the main road through the thick bush. I could not see it, even with the spot light. I could hear branches snapping and the wood on wood sound as it moved away.

I decided to pursue it, whatever it was. I had come this far now;why would I want to quit, even though I was a little scared. I followed in the car, at a crawl. I had the spot trained on the bush searching for it. I could hear it very well. I was doing about 20 Km/Hr and it stayed ahead of me until I sped up to get ahead of it. I stopped then. There was a creek bed that gave me a line of sight about 50 metres into the bush here. The spot stayed on this location. It did not cross, but stayed behind the car now. I could hear the sound of wood on wood clearly.

After about 5 minutes nature came calling, if you know what I mean. I shut off the spot light, opened the car door, and went right there. I heard the wood on wood sound, very close this time. It couldn't have been more than 10 metres into the bush from me. It was followed immediately by a very deep, low growl. It sounded mean. Now I panicked and got into the car. I turned on the spot light again and hit the bush line with it...nothing. It moved the opposite direction now. In my rush and panic I backed the car up to chase it again, and got stuck in the plowed embankment of the road. The dog was whining like crazy. I was a little worried now. What if it came out? I rocked the car like mad and got out 5 minutes later. The fuel gauge sure dropped doing this. I went to the original location of the tracks. It was here I noticed the tracks continued on the left side of the road about 10 metres from the trail on the right. I lit up the left side now, seeing the same tracks. I was standing outside the car. The sound of snapping branches and the wood on wood sound was present, but far away now. I would estimate the distance to be maybe 50 metres. Were there two, or had it just crossed the road when I was stuck? Something told me to leave now. I did not feel safe now. I had chased, but maybe this was too much now. The tension was evident because my dog was curled up in the back seat shaking. This was way out of character for her (She loves the bush normally). I decided to leave at this point and drive down to the end of the road. I turned the car around and came back slowly.

I stopped at the location of the tracks once more. Why I did this I don't know, but I had to. There were no tracks on the road, probably because it was freshly plowed and hard as a rock. The temperature was in the mid - 20's with a partially cloudy sky. The moon was about one quarter full. I listened again for the sounds and heard nothing but dead silence. It was gone....very strange incident indeed. I went home then.

February 17, 2005

Left the house at 09:30, armed with my digital camera, baggies, tape measure and tweezers. I arrived at the site of the encounter from last night at 09:40. Wearing ski-doo pants and boots plus fleece jacket under my parka was ready to spend some time here. I took the trail to the left and found a print in the ditch. A picture was taken of this. The snow here was thigh deep, but the tracks only had a depth of approx. 10 ".

Moving along I found a bed 5' X 4' packed into the snow. It was more or less circular. I took a picture of this also. A little ways up (about 100 M.) there was a smaller set of tracks, same as the other ones, but smaller. They ran parallel to the large set. The dimensions of the large tracks were 14"x9"x10" (LxWxD). The smaller set dimensions were 8"x6"x8". The small set of tracks were not visible from the road. A few Metres ahead of the split there was a urination spot in the snow. The hole was 1" wide and when measured for depth, it went all the way to the ground. It was here I noticed the tips of the Red Osier Dogwoods had been chewed off. This only ocurred along the trail. My heart sank as I walked deeper into the bush. This is so typical of Moose. Two things did not make sense though...the size of the track (large one) and there were no drag marks in the snow. After consulting with a hunter buddy I was left with more questions than answers. 14 Inches is too large for a Moose track and even in knee deep snow they will drag their feet. They tend to be lazy, especially the bulls. The snow here was at least 3 feet deep. I kept going, trudging over a pond, and found two more beds in the snow. One was the same size as the first one a ways back, and the other was half the size. It was here I turned around and went back to the car. I had walked about half a Kilometre.

Back at the car I mulled over what I had just seen. It looked like a Moose trail, but the size of the prints were too large. I did not see any drag marks, but it had staggered steps (typical of a 4 legged animal). I decided to count this one out, due to the characteristics. Could be Moose, may not be. One thing about this business is not everything is going to be an exciting find. Any doubts what-so-ever and the evidence is tossed to the wayside. Instead of going home at this point, I decided to comb the ditches to the end of the road. It was a good chance to do so. I don't get out much during the day.

Near the end I noticed another trail in the snow, on the left side of the road. These tracks were very different from the first! It was easy to get to this set. The snow was only knee deep, sheltered by the Spruce trees. The trail was only 10 metres from the road. Using my glasses for scale, which are 5" wide, I took a close-up shot. These tracks measured 20" long x 10" wide x 12" deep. The gait was that of something walking on two legs. The stride between these tracks was approximately 5 to 6 feet. Each track had a smooth hard bottom, a well rounded heel impression and was fanned out at the top slightly. The pictures There was no evidence of loose snow around the prints, or between the prints. These were not boots or Moose. Whatever made this trail had walked through here with ease. The fact these had not punched through the snow all the way may suggest a very large foot surface area, sort of like a person wearing snow shoes. A few days prior to this day we had a warm spell, with a few days slighty over 0 Celcius. The snow had sunk then got hard when the cold weather returned. There was a few Cm of fresh snow on top, but these tracks were fairly fresh. They followed the ditch for about half a kilometre then veered off into the bush. This trail was not followed, due to time restrictions now.

Back at the house I tried to make sense of this trail, but nothing in the field guide matched it. Grouse will burrow into the snow to keep warm, then flush out when spooked, feet. Cougar, Lynx and Bobcat would have made a very messy hole. They hop through deep snow. I couldn't make a match at all. The fact each print was the same and the stride is consistent, has led me to think there may be a sasquatch in the area. This area gets priority attention now. To date there has been two Sasquatch sightings with-in 5 Km of this area.

February 19, 2005

I made a run down the road I took on the 17 th.Arrived at 23:00 driving slow, combing the bush with the spot light. I took note of a new trail beside the previous one. It was between the original trail and the road, approximately 2 M. from the first one. It ahd snowed a little since I was here last, and the old trail was filling in. This new trail looked fairly fresh. It had the same sizeof print and stride. It was pitch black out though and I didn't have my dog with me. There was no desire to leave the safety of the car for some reason tonight.Sometimes I just don't want to follow through.

I combed the opposite ditch on the way out, but found nothing new. Instead of driving home, I turned down the main road and checked acouple of other spots. There was nothing new. There was a lot of deer and moose tracks, which are quite common here. I threw in the towel and went home.

March 2, 2005

I took off for Maskwa Road late in the evening. I stopped at the junction and got my gear ready, as usual;spot light, camera, etc. With my window open, I crawled along, covering the left side of the road with the spot. I stopped a few times to get a better view to look further into openings in the bush. The weather was nice. It was minus 15 degrees with a slight breeze and clear. The moon had not yet risen. About one Km from the creek I parked the vehicle. Looking for a possible response, I took a nature break. There was no reaction, as compared to the the previous one. There was a trail off the road to the right. I scanned the area with the spot because there was a racket in the bush. Twigs and branches were snapping, but it could have been anything. Taking a chance, I set up here anyway. I sat in the vehicle and rolled down the passenger window. Shutting the vehicle down I sat there and just listened. After a couple of minutes I played the Klamath Caves call, then the biggie calls. They were loud enough to get the attention of anything in the area. Waiting uneasily nothing responded. I looked around me every few seconds, but all was quiet.

Conducting research like this can be a little unnerving. I kept the dog at home tonight for a good reason. The Sasquatch does not like dogs, and an encounter would happen more naturally. There must have been something moving in closer because the snapping noises were coming closer in. The closest the sounds came were appoximately 50 M and then receeded. In total I had spent 30 minutes in this location. It was quite cool, and it was time to move on anyway. I drove the rest of the length of the road, and scanned the other side of the bush on the way out.

At the junction of the main road I turned East, instead of going home. There were a couple more locations out there, but there were no results. This concluded the evening's work, and it was time to turn in.

March 10, 2005

I departed for the bush on the north side of the Winnipeg River this evening at 23:30. It was a cold, windy night. The wind was out of the northwest, and the windchill was bone chilling. I scannned the north side of the road, as usual, with the spot. I did this up to just a little past the creek. I seem to have a thing for this side of the river, probably because there is not much bush between the road and the river. I'm not sure, but avoid it (the bush). Just past the creek I did some call blasting. I waited for ten minutes but there was no response. Driving ahead about 500 Metres, an idea hit me. Wading through the snow I snapped off two sturdy Aspen sticks. The dog was having fun running around as usual. For personal safety reasons, the area was lit up with the spot light.

I did some tree knocks in reps of three. Hardwoods work best because the sound carries far, especially on a cold night. I did some more tree knocks for a few minutes, each time stopping to await a response. There was no answer. I moved back to the road. Shutting the vehicle down, I banged the sticks together on the road. This went on for ten minutes. The windchill was really down there this night (about minus 40). I decided to move on in the vehicle from this point forward. I scanned the north side of the road until the I reached the end. Working my way back I did the same for the south side. The speed had to be slow because anything can be overlooked, due to the thick bush.

About 1 Kilometre before the creek, there was a trail visible that followed a smaller creek bed. I decided to take a closer look, backing up. There appeared to be a formation about ten feet up an Aspen tree. I flagged the trail and departed for home. The wind and cold was enough tonight already.

Note in general

Just a mention regarding the year 2006. It was a very quiet year, with no reports filtering in from anywhere in Manitoba. Despite this, I still took some trips out to the bush. It was very disappointing. Was their absence weather related? I will never know.

June 27, 2007

I took a trip out towards the beaches area. It was 23:30 and the intent was to drive the area. There is always a chance of an unexpected encounter. There was nothing unusual to report.

June 28, 2007

Returned to the same area I was in yesterday. As in most cases, this was a night trip. The time was 23:00. The area was dotted with Pines. The trail I walked followed a ridge, moving away from the road. This area is a transition zone from sandy soil and Pines dropping to swamp and Black Spruce terrain. The swampy terrain covers quite a large area to the north and has no habitation at all. With the terrain facts established, I put on my back pack and grabbed the flashlight.

I followed the trail, which wound it's way in a north-east direction. At 23:20 the moon began to rise, casting long shadows throughout the scattered Pine stands. At the bottom of the ridge, in the Spruce, it was pitch black. I had a bad feeling about being here for some reason. I usually listen to my instincts, but pushed forward pushing my feelings aside. I walked the trail for about a Kilometre, then turned to come back. It was not long after that I heard a very loud snapping noise from the Spruce. It was not that far away either. Stopping, I put my flashlight on the area. There was nothing to be seen. Continuing back to the van this happened 3 more times, each time seeing nothing.

The fourth time this happened, the van was in sight. I carry a fairly long hunting knife for those just in case moments, and this was one of them. Dropping my pack I walked about 30 Metres into the bush. I was still in the well spaced Pine trees. Suddenly, I could hear very heavy breathing 10 Metres to my left. I stopped dead in my tracks and the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Whatever this thing was, it was very big and had a set of good lungs (from the sound of it). A few seconds later I heard the sound of footfall. It was a very low pitched, heavy footfall sound, at least two seconds apart. The sound of it was very audiable. There was no smell, nor could I see anything. The sound of breathing did not stop. Whatever this was, it sounded extremely large. My instincts told me to back away, and did do. At this point I genuinely felt my life was in danger. I must have been followed back the entire Kilometre by this thing. Fear almost took over here, but I kept it together. I had no dog, and was Kilometres away from anybody. Backing away slowly to the safety of the van, I took out a flashlight much more powerful than the one I had been using. There was a cut line a few metres to the right, and I shone the light down it. A little ways up there was a hill, which probably had a good vantage point. I dared not get any closer to this thing. Whatever it was, it would not cross the light beam. I could hear it almost beside the lit trail. Dialing home on the cell, I told my wife I was done for the evening, and was coming home now. The sounds it was making were still quite audiable. Well that was it for the evening for sure. I probably almost got myself done in; all in the name of research, eh? Well, sometimes there are risks involved.

All the way home I thought of all the possibilities. It was too heavy sounding for a big cat (we have a healthy Cougar population here)and too quiet for a moose. Deer are very skittish and I have never heard of a deer following a person for a Km. Black bears are stealthy and their paws are padded. If it had been a mother bear, she would have taken her cubs away, and not followed me. Bears do not breathe like that. The sound of the foot fall and the breathing was just different. I have seen most animals here (except a Cougar). This was exceptionally large. The only other possibility is that I was in a Sasquatch domicile, and he was just making sure I left. My instincts go against another night trip here alone, even with the dog.

July 9, 2007

Totally going against my principles, I returned to the site of the unknown encounter (June 28, 07) with my dog. I arrived at 22:45 and it was very dark. Rain was spitting and the sky was overcast. I proceeded to check out the area now, feeling a lot more confident with the dog. She has a good nose and a good set of ears. I inspected the area the creature had been in. Whatever had been here was no more. The dog did not act abnormal once. In total, time spent there was about one hour. There were no signifigant finds.

July 15, 2007

I received a telephone call this evening. Two witnesses had seen a sasquatch during broad daylight from a close distance in the beaches area. Upon measuring the distance on google maps, the distance between my unknown encounter and theirs was only one Km. See sighting report 008 for more details.

July 21, 2007

My son and I spent the afternoon walking and scouting the area of the sasquatch sighting. It was a damn hot day (in the mid 30's). I drove down the trail as far as I could, then we walked. We noticed tree snaps about 3 m high, but didn't actually notice it until the return trip. The trees were Willows. There was a trail right there, and the direction of the tree snaps indicated the direction of the trail. We could see it led through some very thick underbrush. Taking the east side trail we walked it for a few minutes. There was another trail, which intersected this one. After a while the trail was lost, but in one area there was a partial track of something. Upon inspection it was a very large partial footprint (8" wide and 1.5" deep). There were what appeared to be two toes visible on the right side. This was the left print of something. It was interesting, but I had no camera (of course....). After this we decided to pack it in for the day; it was just too hot today.

July 22 - Aug. 20, 2007

Took a few night trips around the area, but no more evidence came to light, until......

Aug. 21, 2007

My son and I took and evening trip to the sighting area. Our location was in close proximity to the sighting location itself. This all started at 19:00 and lasted until sundown. I parked the truck across the trail to get a good 3 directional view of the area. This time we had raw fish fillets to try and lure something in. Two fillets went onto a rock about 30 m from us on the north side. Two more were placed on the opposite side. The terrain here was well spaced Pines with little or no underbrush. Now the fun part began; we parked ourselves in our lawnchairs, sitting in the truck box, and waited. After an hour my son decided to take a walk to stretch. He only got about 30 - 40 m away from me, when I heard a distinct wood on wood sound. It was very loud, and startled us. I called him back urgently, fearing for his safety. It sounded like someone striking a tree with a stick. The direction it came from was littered with young Spruce fairly close together. After calling out, saying hello, etc, there was no answer. It could not have been a falling tree because there were no splinter or crash sounds (just the knock). There were no other people around that we knew of (nobody knew of our whereabouts). It was strange and a little unnerving.
With my son in the truck box, I went to inspect the area the sound had come from. There was nothing in the area. Forget about footprints here; the ground was covered with moss and Pine needles. I moved the fish farther away from the truck now, went back and waited some more. I took note of the wind direction, which was W-SW. A while later my son said he heard a loud, yet soft footstep on our south side. I did not hear it. The whole trip was creepy, and had a mild feeling we were being watched. As darkness began to fall, we saw a tee pee formation (3 sticks). I did take a picture of this one. It was then homeward bound. This had been one eventful evening.

Aug. 22, 2007

Another evening trip for my son and I to the same location; We stayed in the same general area, but chose two separate locations within. The first was about half a Km from yesterday's. The nice part of having a 4 x 4 is you can actually drive through the forest! Anyway, we found our spot in a well spaced stand of Jack Pine. I planted the fish on a log a ways from the truck on the north side. After only 5 minutes I saw something moving. Beyond the well spaced Pines, there was a transition zone of open swamp surrounded by Black Spruce. It was very black and of substantial size. The size was what surprised me. It was only a 10 second glimpse, but it moved very fast and gracefully. I could not make a positive I.D. because it was too far (about 100 M) and it moved too fast. My son did not see it.

That was all the action for this area. Nothing happened after that. What we did notice was the forest was very quiet today; not even the chirping of birds. We both thought this was very bizarre. You always hear something in the bush. We went back to the location of the tree knock. We waited for a while and walked the road for a while quietly. By the time it began to get dark, we packed it in for the evening.

This was the last outting for the year, but I will return in 2008 with a lot of ambition. If anything happens you can rest assured it will be described here.
